PHOENIX (July 19, 2023) — As thousands of children in the Valley return to school, many of the people who make sure they get to school safely will take part in regional training workshops the last week of July and early August.

The 2023 Regional School Crossing Guard Training Workshops are sponsored by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) and its member agencies.  Three in-person workshops are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon for the following dates and locations:

  • Wednesday, July 26, 2023, Devonshire Senior Center – Auditorium, 2802 E Devonshire Ave, Phoenix, 85016
  • Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Coronado High School – Auditorium, 7501 E Virginia Ave, Scottsdale, 85257
  • Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Rio Vista Recreation Center - 8866 W Thunderbird Rd, Peoria, 85381

The training session is from 9 a.m. to noon. Hundreds of school crossing guards are expected to attend the workshops. Even more will watch the previous recordings posted on the MAG Safe Routes to School website.

The training to be provided will include essential crossing guard procedures, information on the health and welfare of guards, and resources available from police and fire departments to help the guards ensure the children’s safety as well as their own.

Special sessions will review traffic laws regarding crosswalks, procedures that must be followed in the crosswalks and proper equipment that guards rely on to perform their duties safely and effectively.

School crossing guards who are interested in participating in the training workshops must register online by July 24, 2023. For more information on the regional workshops for crossing guards, please contact the Maricopa Association of Governments, (602)-254-6300 or visit the MAG Safe Routes to School website.
