PHOENIX – (July 14, 2022) -- As thousands of children in the Valley return to school, many of the people who make sure they get to school safely will take part in a regional training workshop the first week of August.

The 2022 Regional School Crossing Guard Training Workshop is sponsored by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which represents 27 cities and towns, three native nations, Maricopa County, and portions of Pinal County. An in-person workshop is scheduled for the following date and location:

9 a.m. – Noon
Tuesday, August 2, 2022
Washington High School – Auditorium
2217 W. Glendale Ave, Phoenix 85021

About 250 school crossing guards are expected to attend the workshop. Even more will watch a recording that will be available online by August 16, 2022.

The training will include essential crossing guard procedures, information on the health and welfare of guards in carrying out their duties, and resources available from police and fire departments to help the guards ensure the children’s safety as well as their own.

Special sessions will review traffic laws regarding crosswalks, procedures that must be followed in the crosswalks and proper equipment that guards rely on to perform their duties safely and effectively.

School crossing guards who are interested in participating in the training workshops must register online by July 29.

For more information on the regional workshops for crossing guards, please contact the Maricopa Association of Governments, 602-254-6300, or visit MAG Safe Routes to School. Members of the media are welcome to attend at any time during the workshop, but may want to coordinate with MAG to determine the best coverage opportunities.
