Road Safety and tech

The region's first Systems Management and Operations Plan serves as a guide for MAG to expand and support essential technology, resources and infrastructure that will lead to improved coordination between our freeways and adjacent arterial roads. The safety and technology program area implements the use of advanced technologies to improve travel by people on foot, on bikes, and in cars, buses and trucks in the Valley. It also identifies current and potential safety issues, concerns and needs in the region and determines ways to address them.

  • I-10 Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) Development Planning Study

    MAG is undertaking the Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) Deployment Planning Study for the I-10 Corridor through the Phoenix metropolitan area.
  • City of Buckeye Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Strategic Plan

    MAG is coordinating with City of Buckeye staff to develop the city’s first ITS Strategic Plan that would help the agency make strategic investments in ITS infrastructure and equip the agency with staff to manage and operate the system.

  • Emergency Vehicle Preemption State of the Practice

    MAG conducted a comprehensive study regarding current Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) practices in the MAG region.
  • Evaluations of Safety and Elderly Mobility Signs

    The MAG Transportation Safety Committee and the MAG Elder Mobility Stakeholders Group jointly launched a road safety project aimed at improving the road environment for older road users.
  • Freeway Service Patrol

    The Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) Program is a regional effort by MAG, Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
  • Guidelines for ITS Planning in Smaller Jurisdictions

    The goal of this MAG study was to develop a document that would serve as a guideline and template that could be readily utilized by staff at smaller jurisdictions in the MAG region to plan and implement ITS infrastructure.

    The committee oversees the development of regional plans. These include the ITS Strategic Plan, Regional ITS Architecture operations planning necessary for integrated corridor management, and studies to support ITS infrastructure planning. These plans serve as the guide for investments in regional ITS infrastructure and in the use of technology-based solutions that manage and operate the region’s multimodal transportation system.
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems Program

    Intelligent Transportation Systems, or ITS, is the usage of sensor, computer, electronics and communication technologies and management strategies in a cohesive way. The goal is to improve the safety and efficiency of the surface transportation system.

    Member agencies are invited to submit candidate projects for inclusion in the FY2018 Local Agency Safety Studies (LASS) Program.
  • MAG Highway Safety Improvement Program

    The Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is a core program that was introduced through SAFETEA-LU and is focused on improving road safety.
  • MAG Regional ITS Architecture

    The Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture describes how the various applications of ITS implemented across the Phoenix metropolitan region are interconnected and function as a regional system.

    Road Safety Assessments (RSAs) are a proactive approach to improving road safety. They involve a formal examination, from a road safety viewpoint, of a particular intersection or an arterial or freeway corridor.

    The Safe Routes to School Program consists of providing resources for schools and municipalities to administer Safe Routes to School (SRTS) initiatives and activities.

    The goal of this MAG study is to produce a Systems Management and Operations Plan that would help guide the MAG region in making strategic investments needed to expand.

    Traffic signal optimization is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve traffic movement and make our streets safer and more efficient.
  • Transportation Safety Committee

    The primary goal of the MAG Transportation Safety Planning Program is to identify both current and potential future transportation safety issues, concerns and needs in the region, and determine ways to address them through the regional transportation planning process. Oversight for this planning process is provided by the Transportation Safety Committee (TSC). The TSC consists of safety professionals representing Federal Highway Administration, Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Arizona Department of Transportation, 16 local agencies, Valley Metro, AAA Arizona and AARP. The committee meets bimonthly and all meetings are open to the public.
