The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is an effort to learn more about the individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County and the entire country. In order to accomplish local and federal goals toward ending homelessness, we first need to know who is experiencing homelessness, where they are, and better understand the factors surrounding their homelessness. According to local data collected during the 2014 PIT count, 5,918 people had experienced homelessness in Maricopa County, with 1,053 of them reported to be sleeping on the streets and 4,865 people in shelters. Of the total people counted, 1,819 were children. Efforts are underway to conduct the 2015 PIT street count during the early morning hours of February 24, 2015. Like previous years, the 2015 PIT count is a one-night street and shelter count to determine the number of people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County during a given point-in-time. The count includes a brief survey to collect information about people experiencing homelessness. As the lead agency for the Maricopa County Continuum of Care, MAG coordinates the regional count each year. The street count is critical to securing millions of dollars in Continuum of Care Program homeless assistance funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) each year.
