Regional Community Network

What is RCN?

The Regional Community Network (RCN) is a private Wide Area Network (WAN) connecting MAG member agencies to facilitate the exchange of transportation-related data throughout the MAG region. The RCN uses existing agency-owned fiber and wireless infrastructure and is managed by MAG at no cost for the benefit of the region.

Which MAG member agencies are connected?

MAG plans to eventually connect all MAG member agencies to the RCN, with the following connections already in place:

  • ADOT
  • City of Apache Junction
  • City of Avondale
  • City of Buckeye
  • City of Chandler
  • City of El Mirage
  • Town of Gilbert
  • City of Glendale
  • City of Goodyear
  • Maricopa County
  • City of Mesa
  • City of Peoria
  • City of Phoenix
  • Town of Queen Creek
  • City of Scottsdale
  • City of Surprise
  • City of Tempe
  • Valley Metro

In addition to primary connections to each member agency, MAG looks for opportunities for secondary connections for redundancy that will improve the reliability of this important regional transportation infrastructure.

How do I get connected?

If you are a MAG member agency, please contact the ITS Program Manager to find out what is needed to get your agency connected. Other government agencies may also contact MAG to discuss options and a simple agreement is all that is required to participate. Private sector connections are not supported due to the funding source used and the critical nature of this transportation infrastructure.

What can I put on the network?

There are a limited number of approved uses for the network, all of which must be transportation related.  The largest current use is for the sharing of live traffic camera feeds for traffic management and traveler information across jurisdictional boundaries. Additional uses can be approved through an application process and more information is available in the RCN Roles and Responsibilities document, available under “Materials”.
