The Environmental Division works with MAG members and regional partner agencies to provide planning, coordination, and technical assistance to address air pollution, wastewater treatment, and solid waste in the MAG region.

MAG has been designated by the Governor as the lead planning agency for air quality, water quality management, and solid waste in the MAG region. In this role, division staff provide planning and technical expertise to produce regional plans that meet federal requirements.

The Environmental Division also works closely with the Transportation Division to ensure that transportation plans, programs and projects conform to federal air quality requirements, allowing these critical regional investments to proceed.

Regional Air Quality Planning

MAG was designated by the Governor of Arizona in 1978, certified by the Arizona Legislature in 1992, and recertified by Governor Ducey in 2016 to serve as the lead regional air quality planning agency for the MAG region.

Air Quality Modeling & Analysis

In accordance with the Clean Air Act, modeling analysis is required for the purpose of demonstrating the future attainment and continued maintenance of federal air quality standards.

Air Quality & Transportation

The Clean Air Act requires transportation conformity in areas designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as nonattainment or maintenance.

Solid Waste and Wastewater Planning

In accordance with Section 208 of the Clean Water Act, MAG is the designated Regional Water Quality Management Planning Agency for Maricopa County.
