Walking is the most basic means of travel and is part of every trip. Pedestrians, including those using mobility devices, are perhaps the most vulnerable roadway users. Special care and attention needs to go into street design that provides safe, comfortable, and attractive walking environments. Pedestrian infrastructure includes essentials such as sidewalks as well as elements like public art and wayfinding that enhance the overall walking experience. This is an important consideration when encouraging more walking and transit trips.
