Phoenix (August 26, 2026) – As summer concludes and students throughout the Valley return to school, the commitment to ensuring their safe passage remains unwavering. The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has been actively leading crossing guard training workshops across the region since the early 2000s. This year, the region has adopted a new and innovative approach that has more than doubled the number of participants.

• As part of broader road safety initiatives, the annual in-person workshops provided basic education and training to school crossing guards across the region.
• MAG has updated the training materials and moved the regional crossing guard training to an online platform – a move that improves access and availability.
• The online crossing guard training is available on the MAG website at: https://azmag.gov/Crossing-Guard-Training

Why It Is Important:

The new approach offers consistent, high-quality instruction throughout the year, featuring updated training videos and a revised manual accessible to crossing guards at their convenience. All materials are provided in both English and Spanish. The content delivers essential education and training for school crossing guards in a reorganized and modernized format. The training concludes with a form for participants to enter their name, email, and school/district, which then sends them a confirmation email noting they have completed the training. Each participant can then forward the email to their supervisor as a record of training completion.

By The Numbers:

• The refreshed online training continues to cover basic safety education and training for school crossing guards and contains approximately 45 minutes of video content.
• With the change in format, the training program has more than doubled its participation rate.
• In 2025, 150 people completed the training; so far in 2026, that number is almost 400.
