Events Happening Around the Region
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and communities throughout the valley are marking the occasion with events, seminars, training sessions, fundraisers, and collection drives.
As we enter October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Maricopa Association of Governments is raising its focus those who become homeless as a result of fleeing domestic violence. 90 percent of homeless women have experienced severe physical or sexual abuse and 44 percent of cities nationally identified domestic violence as the primary cause of homelessness.
Those looking for help to escape abuse are encouraged to speak with someone they trust, create a plan for their safety (including the safety of children and pets), and contact a domestic violence provider in the community for additional resources. Domestic violence providers work closely with the homeless provider system to help survivors find shelter and ensure their safety is a priority.
