For more than two generations, our region has maintained its reputation as a rapidly growing area. And that reality is expected to continue for the next 25 years.

This past June, MAG staff presented the Region in Review, reporting on data trends that are shaping our future. The report is organized into four topics: 

Demographics - Between 2010 and 2023, the region’s population rose by 21 percent, putting us just over five million, with an expected population of 7.1 million by 2050

Housing - For the first time, in 2023, multifamily construction outpaced single-family home development with 26 percent of the region’s housing being multifamily housing units.

Workforce and economy -The region’s labor force is evolving, with job growth, shifting participation, and changing occupations. While top occupations saw increases, material moving occupations like truck drivers and warehouse workers experienced the largest growth since 2010 (143 percent), highlighting expansion in the logistics sector.

Working in the region – The workforce is supported by a 50 percent increase in business locations since 2010, a 26-minute average commute, and robust foreign investment trends.

This report describes a region that is intentionally growing with robust infrastructure to support it, thanks in part to residents’ continued commitment to investing in long-term transportation investments like Proposition 479.

As chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments, I am committed to continuing to use data and eliciting feedback from residents to plan a strong and sustainable future.
