North Valley Study

The North Valley Corridor begins on the north at the interchange of I-17 and Pioneer Road. It continues south for about ten miles to the I-17/Loop 101 System Interchange. The corridor then turns east and continues for five more miles along Loop 101 to Cave Creek Road.

This 15-mile corridor has 18 interchanges and partial interchanges. Areas experiencing major congestion today include the I-17/ Loop 303 interchange, the I-17/Loop 101 interchange, and the entire Loop 101 mainline between I-17 and Cave Creek Road.

Study Objectives

  1. Understand the function of I-17 and Loop 101 freeways for access and mobility as well as the impacts of each of the ramps within the I-17/Loop 101 system interchange.
  2. Assess safety and develop recommended improvements.
  3. Identify improvements needed to meet the anticipated demand, as well as more moderate improvements that optimize safety and operations considering existing constraints.
  4. Recommend enhancing or adding new arterial roads to address travel demands in the corridor.
  5. Develop priorities for the next steps leading to design and construction of the proposed improvements and regional connections.
  6. Identify and evaluate potential funding opportunities.
