Wickenburg Transportation Area Master Plan

Study Background

The Town of Wickenburg is a regional hub located northwest of the Phoenix metropolitan area, providing critical connections between rural communities and the urban core. Its transportation network is defined by three state-managed highways — US 60, US 93, and State Route 89 (SR 89) — that carry a mix of local, regional, and interstate traffic. These corridors, along with the Town’s local streets and rural roadways, serve a diverse set of travel needs, from commuter trips and goods movement to seasonal tourism traffic.

The TAMP will address current and future mobility needs by identifying a balanced and “right-sized” transportation network that reflects the unique context of Wickenburg. The plan will establish a roadway classification system, align roadway design with adjacent land uses, and incorporate multimodal improvements to enhance safety, connectivity, and access for all users. It will also evaluate opportunities to improve north–south connectivity between US 93 and US 60, strengthen network resiliency, and ensure reliable travel options in the event of roadway closures or emergencies.

Once complete, the Wickenburg TAMP will serve as a guiding framework for capital improvement planning, development review, and grant funding applications. It will establish clear priorities, cost estimates, and policies to guide decision-making, ensuring that Wickenburg’s transportation system meets current needs while preparing for future demands.

Public Input

We want to hear from you! Use the interactive comment map below to identify transportation issues, concerns, and opportunities within the study area. You will be able to drop comments on a map to highlight locations related to traffic congestion, safety issues, drainage/flooding, bike/pedestrian opportunities, and other transportation-related topics. Public input will help guide the development of future transportation improvements and recommendations for this study.

Study Objectives

The purpose of this study is to develop a Transportation Area Master Plan (TAMP) for the Town of Wickenburg’s Municipal Planning Area (MPA). This plan will assess existing and future multimodal travel demands within the study area and develop a program of recommended improvements that focus on serving forecasted demand, improving safety, enhancing both local and regional connectivity/mobility, and supporting the planned development through 2050. This study includes:

  1. Stakeholder Coordination
  2. Multimodal Safety Assessment
  3. Roadway Functional Classification System
  4. Transit Feasibility Analysis
  5. Network Redundancy and Connectivity Analysis
  6. Phased Project Implementation Plan
  7. Funding Strategy
  8. Public Involvement

Study Area

Located along the intermittent Hassayampa River, The Town of Wickenburg serves as a multimodal junction, connecting US 60 to US 93 and SR 89 as well as a freight rail interchange and a general aviation airport. The Wickenburg TAMP Study Area is comprised of the Town’s 434 square mile area Municipal Planning Area (MPA), including both incorporated and unincorporated land that is largely undeveloped. The MPA is located on the north edge of Maricopa County and extends slightly north into Yavapai County. The study area boundary extends from approximately Wickenburg Road/South Vulture Mine Road intersection on the south to 440th Avenue on the west, Constellation Road/Aurora Hills Road intersection on the east, and north beyond the US 93/SR 89 junction in Yavapai County, fully encompassing the limits of the Town of Wickenburg MPA.
