What is TSMO?

Transportation System Management and Operations (TSMO) refers to managing our region's transportation systems. This includes infrastructure, road safety and travel demand management. It also refers to traffic operations enhanced with new technologies. TSMO focuses on improvements that can restore and maintain the capacity of the existing transportation system without adding more lanes.

MAG's Notable Recent Efforts

  • Developed a comprehensive System Management and Operations (SMO) plan that identified infrastructure needs in priority corridors and recommends strategies needed to improve operations.
  • Completed the federally funded I-10 Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) Development Planning Study. ICM is one of the key strategies of TSMO which involves multi-modal and multi-jurisdictional efforts in managing congestions caused by incidents along major commute corridors. The study developed specific ICM strategies for the western segment of the I-10 corridor to actively manage the freeway-to-arterial traffic diversions during an incident.
  • Created a Regional ITS Architecture which contains a detailed inventory and interconnects of existing and planned ITS deployments in and across MAG member agencies. MAG Regional ITS Architecture is a foundation for the region’s planning of TSMO and emerging technologies.
  • MAG's Traffic Signal Optimization Program (TSOP) provides annual technical assistance to MAG member agencies to re-time the traffic signals across the regions.
  • Conducted a multi-year pilot project and led to the permanent funding to co-locate a Department of Safety (DPS) officer at the ADOT Traffic Operations Center for improved coordination and management of traffic incidents on the urban freeway system. MAG's Goals

  • Safety - Reduce crashes and fatalities through improved traffic management and procedures.
  • Efficiency - Optimize existing transportation system capacity to mitigate congestion.
  • Reliability - Manage critical corridors to minimize travel time fluctuations in the daily commute.
  • Collaboration – Streamline TSMO as a core objective in transportation planning, design, construction, and maintenance across agencies.
  • Leadership - Provide region leadership in research and implementation of emerging technologies.
